SHOW NOTES:

Avoid a finance committee in name only, meaning there is no foundation for a committee.

  • If a finance committee is set up well, it can be the most powerful tool in a campaign. It is important to do it with intentionality.
  • Remember that before you run, you need to at least have 600 names on a list.
  • This finance committee will be created from your list.
  • These people will share your vision for your campaign.
  • Some people will not want to be named on a committee, but will still help raise money.
  • There is nothing wrong with this.
  • One pitfall is by bringing on people that have not agreed to be on the committee.
  • Have clear conversations.
  • Make the ask about money needed to be raised.
  • Start off with a higher number and recruit people to raise that specific amount.
  • Have the most important role finance committee chair to inspire people and build relationships.
  • Create the committee as an opportunity for people to talk with others about what they care about.
  • You can enroll people into what is possible.
  • Before you start running for office, you want to start thinking about all of the people that could be on your finance committee.
  • Have a finance committee sheet with an agreement of the direction such as amount needed to raise, when money is needed, call time, be clear and always in communication.
  • The point of a finance committee is to extend your network. Have diversity among the members, meaning different organizations. Think outside the box.
  • Let prospective finance committee members know how serving on this committee can make a difference for them.
  • As the candidate, it is important for you to stay in communication with your finance committee to develop and deepen those relationships.
  • Always keep recruiting people to your finance committee.
  • Things can happen and you will need new people.
